Truth : Philosophy or Religion ?

One of my recent readings, a special one, was "God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins, an atheist who is trying to prove his point by all rational process and available resources. Unlike my family or friend circle, I am okay with this as over a time frame I have realized that the will and ability to question anything and everything to find the right answer is always commendable, immaterial of the findings they land up to. And this was perhaps one of the driving force behind the old philosophies, like the Hindu Philosophy (mind it not Hindu Religion). With time philosophies tend to become religions and religion starts producing Gods and unquestionable beliefs.

There was a recent Hindi film "Oh My God" which had a very relevant and thought provoking statement...."don't snatch religion from people, then they will make you their religion". History perhaps justifies this. From time in memorial someone has said something, someone learnt something, someone wrote what he learnt....in all these steps there must have been some losses based on individual perception of senses. As a result different preaching, different religions, different sects came into picture. This is good if the urge to question stays undisturbed as then new ideas, new thoughts & philosophies will come up. The inquisitiveness to know the unknown (which is often termed as "Divine Search") led to the formation of Gautam Buddha, Isaac Newton, Darwin or Albert Einstein. Different routes but same intent.

There was a time when Managers of Religions were serious life threats to budding scientists/philosophers. With time the zeal of the truth seekers won over the Managers as right to questioning grew popular and were justified by experimental results. Even today the grey areas of life where Science have not yet succeeded in finding logical interpretations people consider that as Spiritual or Divine. With time upcoming explanations will erode away old beliefs. Darwin's theory of Survival of the Fittest came up for explanation of Evolution of Animal World but I find it relevant to human life, beyond biological boundaries. Things which have withstand the test of time have survived, be it science or philosophy.

If the likes of Kabir, Budhha, Vivekananda were philosophers then it's the same for Newton, Einstein, Darwin, Ramanujan, Satyen Bose or Stephen Hawkins. A man like Hawkins who is in such physical state in which anyone would surrender to fate, still fighting to find out that "ONE EQUATION" which defines everything. This itself is a great philosophy, never surrender. His never ending passion to search compels me to salute him for the ENERGY he represents..this is in one word GOD-ly. Kabir's doha or SUFI music does not speak of God but there is somewhere something which speaks of a presence..which perhaps is there in Hawkins too!!!

Rituals

Recently I saw one episode of TED Talk (in YouTube)...it was about Rituals... and certain things came up on my mind.

Over the years I have felt that people have started identifying Rituals as Religion. I have serious objection to this, we need to clear the cloud on our Head on that. Religion is supposed to be something which helps shaping up minds, rituals are just the means. But that does not imply a particular set of Ritual is the only Correct way. In short, Ritual=Practice. Doing a Pranayam in the morning or going to a temple/church/mosque may be a Ritual for one but may be an act of irritation for someone else. Aim of ritual (and not religion) is to help yourself Holding on to your own in times of Stress or Pain and prepare yourself to get more disciplined. It's a way of building self-confidence. For a cricketer the morning Net Practice might be his best ritual, or for a singer the morning riwaz. Someone might like to finish a day by reading some pages of a book, or may be watching a movie, some might like a family time or some a solo space at the days end. All these are Rituals and as much HOLY as visiting a religious institution. So, everyone should have his/her own Ritual and not get influenced by other's rituals. On a lighter note for someone a morning tea or the nature's call in the morning might be the most important ritual of his day.

Sunil Gavaskar used to speak about the on field 3Ds ( discipline, dedication & determination) when asked about his batting. In my view a player like Rahul Dravid is one such player who might be having similar set of Rituals. If someone recalls the Eden Test 2001, the sublime innings of VVS Laxman overshadowed everything, but those who saw Day 4 batting got a classical example of Cricket Ritual from Dravid. A man who was struggling in form, from 1st test to 1st hour of Day 4 of 2nd test finally scored 180 runs, the runs which enabled history to be scripted. Call this grit, determination, religion etc. but there was a Ritual which has helped him shaping up his mind over the years.

I re-iterate, it is of utmost important that everyone should have his self-made Ritual. Type of Ritual will help shaping up his Religion, rather the requirement (or not) of Religion will help him find his Ritual.

"ইচ্ছে হল কথাটা বলার"

বহুদিন পর আজ বসলাম। ইদানিংকালে storytelling concept আমাকে আকর্ষণ করছে তাই আজ নিজের story নিজে লিখব, যে story কোনদিনও প্রকাশ পেল না, পেলে কি হত জানা নেই কিন্তু সেদিন সেটাই ছিল সব। আমার জীবনের 31 বছর যে বাড়িতে কেটেছে তার কোন একদিন এ চলে যাই, মনে অনেক দিন আছে কিন্তু এরকম এক বা একাধিক দিন যা আজ ভাবলে ভালো লাগে।

কালীঘাটের পাঁচতলার ফ্ল্যাটটার ট্যাড়া-বেঁকা সবচেয়ে বড় ঘরটা ছিল মা-বাবার বা আমাদের। 550 স্কয়ার ফিটের কার্পেট এরিয়ার 3 room set তাতে 6 জন প্রাণী যে যেখানে পারে ফিট হয়ে গেছিল। বড় ঘরটার উত্তর দিকে একটা জানালা ছিল যা দিয়ে নিচের রাস্তা, মানুষ, গাড়ি বাড়ি, ইডেন গাডেন এর লাইটপোস্ট, হাওড়া ব্রিজ, দ্বিতীয় হুগলী সেতু সবই দেখা যেত।

সেই উত্তরের জানালায় অনেক স্মৃতি। শীত-গ্রীষ্ম-বর্ষা কোন সময় জানালা বন্ধ হতো না। সকলের প্রিয় জায়গা ওটা, বলতে গেলে coveted place। জানালা দিয়ে কখনো পাশের বাড়ির তৈরি হওয়া, বন্ধের দিন নীচে পাড়ার ছেলেদের ফুটবল বা ক্রিকেট দেখা, বিশ্বকর্মা পুজোর দিন আমার  প্রাণপাত ঘুড়ি ওড়ানোর প্রচেষ্টা। মাঝেমধ্যে দক্ষিণের ফুরফুরে হাওয়া ঘুড়িটাকে উড়িয়ে নিয়ে যেত তিনতলা বাড়ীর হাইটে. তারপর হাওয়ার দমক হারিয়ে গেলে লুটিয়ে পড়তো রাস্তাতে কখনো বা চলন্ত ট্যাক্সির চাকার নিচে কিম্বা তার মাথায়।

কিন্তু সবচেয়ে বড় স্মৃতি বোধহয় taxi চালানোর উপাখ্যান. ঠাকুরমার একটা অ্যালুমিনিয়ামের  saucepan ছিল, সেটা সুন্দর ফিট করে যেত জানালার গ্রীলের ফাঁকে steering wheel এর মতন একটু এঙ্গেল করে। তাই ওটার মালিকানা transfer হয়েছিল আমার নামে কোন আইনি কাগজপত্র ছাড়াই। দিদির একটা কাঠের স্কেল ছিল সেটা আমার গাড়ির গিয়ার ছিল। মায়ের একটা ড্রেসিং টেবিল tool, যা আজও বর্তমান, ছিল driver seat। ওটার উচ্চতা এত সুন্দর ছিল যে আমার মতন সুদক্ষ ড্রাইভার এর আই সাইটের obstruction হত না. আমি আশেপাশের মানে নীচের সমস্ত গাড়ি দেখতে পারতাম। বাঁ হাতে সীটে একটা খাঁজে কাঠের স্কেল গুঁজে gear control করতাম আর ডান হাতে স্টিয়ারিং হুইল। অসাধারণ ড্রাইভিং, ব্রেকের অসুবিধে হয়নি কখনো clutch এর ও প্রয়োজন ছিল না। horn তা অবশ্য মুখ দিয়েই দিতে হতো। Passenger রা যেকোনো জায়গা থেকে যেকোনো জায়গায় যেতে পারত টাকা লাগত না, refusal ছিলনা। প্যাসেঞ্জার থাক না থাক গাড়ি সবসময় চলত তেল ভরার বালাই ছিল না। যেকোনো রুটে গাড়ি চলত  সব রুট ছিল জানা।

শুনেছি ছোটবেলা থেকে যে যেটা ভেবে বড় হয়ে সেটা করলে সবচেয়ে successful হয়। মনে নেই ঠিক কোনটা প্রথম হতে চেয়েছিলাম taxi driver না বাস/ট্রাম conductor। কিন্তু বড় হয় এই দুটোর একটাও হতে চাইতাম না সে ব্যাপারে আজ নিশ্চিত। কলকাতার রাস্তার সর্দার taxi driver এবং তাদের রাস্তার জ্ঞান আমাকে মুগ্ধ করতো কিছুটা thrilling লাগতো।

কন্ডাকটার দেখে বেশ লাগতো। ইউনিফর্ম পড়ে টিকিটের  bunch এ হাতের বুড়ো আঙ্গুল দিয়ে একটা অদ্ভুত শব্দ করে যখন টিকিট চাইত মনে হতো কত ক্ষমতা ওদের, টিকিট কেনার জন্য লোকে টাকা বের করে দিচ্ছে। যখন স্কুল কলেজে পড়ি, জীবনের preliminary romanticism গেছে তখন দেখলাম conductor ইউনিফর্ম পড়ে না, রাস্তাতেও সর্দার ট্যাক্সিওয়ালা দেখা যায় না।
