Dangal

There are not many days when deep into the night the Country kept staring at the TV set or the Mobile Screen without the prospect of any to-be century from Sachin or Virat. The viewership number at the screen corner continuously crept up as the expectation for a second time gold from Neeraj Chopra kept growing, such has been his impact on recent years. It was Silver this time but was enough for a New Promise, a New Hope.

It is barely two-three decades back when we craved for a single medal at the Olympics ! Time is changing, the numbers are increasing irrespective of the colours. Maybe in another ten years or so things will change further for the better, even if we are not there to witness.

Post 1947, the Himalayan volume of work to be done perhaps never helped us to consider Sports more as a luxury than an opportunity. No blame, a country struggling to find food & earnings for all could rarely look beyond the fittest mode of survival. Hence, Sports were never encouraged and the necessity of literacy found utmost importance to find bread for the bigger family. Poverty, Uncertainty & the Fear for it had built an Invincible Image in the mind

Things have changed then, quality of life has improved substantially in a major part of India. While the debate over BPL (below poverty line) & Free Ration still persists, even then things have improved. There is a large section of middle class affluent in every sense of the term.

With jobs at MNCs, foreign countries and handsome financial backup they are Safe & Sound. But still they have not yet outgrown the Fear over Uncertainty; serious SPORTS are still not there in the check list of the well-to-do parents.

Yet we want our Athletes at the Olympics to win over all hurdles, uncertainties & bring home buckets of medals of all colours. No defence for the failure, still the Expectation is asking too much. Perhaps we are unable to go through the Uncertainties the Career of Sports involve & we expect 100% success !

Till the Parents (specially middle class) have outgrown their Mental Poverty, Sports in India shall continue to be a Minority in the Olympic Games.

Let's not worry about the failures, let's drop the complexity over colours, let's celebrate the numbers, the journey is yet to begin, the battlefield is right inside us !

"Maa ke pet se marghat tak Hai
Teri kahaani pag pag pyare
Dangal dangal Dangal dangal
Sooraj tera chadhta dhalta
Gardish mein karte hain taare
Dangal dangal Dangal dangal"

🙏🙏🙏 Thanks to all the Athletes of Paris2024

Sunday Morning

Sunday Morning, reminds me of the excitement that centered around the telecast of 'Ramanand Sagar's 'Ramayan' on National Television (Doordarshan). Sooner than later after the TV Series was over, this was followed by 'B.R. Chopra's 'Mahabharat'.

From a Quality perspective, there can hardly be any denial that the latter was a far more superior product. The Story Telling in 'Mahabharat' was not intended to create a 'Godly Presence', the focus was creating an audio-visual documentation of what was written thousands of years ago.

This was the late 80s, just before the Gulf War, when the Indian Economy was yet to open up and the country was struggling through the past challenges and damages with hardly any significant progress in any field be it Trade & Commerce, Geo-Political position, Science & Technology or Sports. Perhaps, the overall conservative approach of India delayed a Growth where regions like South East Asia & countries like China made galloping progress.

But this was Serious Stuff, the commoners in India hardly had anything to do with it. There was no Cable TV, no Internet, no Smartphone, what were they busy with ?

Beyond cricket & movies it was these 'Doordarshan' epics which created the waves. Along with this came in 'Gulshan Kumar' led 'T-Series' & 'Narendra Chanchal'. Their conversions of Hindi Movie Song tunes to 'Jai Mata Di' products swept all over the Northern belt of India.

Thus, 'Sagar', 'Chanchal' & 'Kumar' created an atmosphere where a larger than life image was created. Intended or unintended, the image plantation procedure Damaged the Fabric of a Nation, which unknowingly declared itself to be a separatist approach in 'Hinduism', the rest of the 'Hindus' in the country could not feel connected.

As a Traveller, moving across from one state to another like West Bengal, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, etc being a 'Hindu' was (and is) never visible as a loud assertive approach like the Abrahamic (specifically Islamic) practice of India. But the 'Jai Mata di' infusion changed the mindset for the then & upcoming generations. The effect has reached such to heights that today in the montsh of 'Sravan' (July-August) there are frequently seen groups on trucks & bikes with high decibel boxes howling at DJ Version of 'Jai Mata di'.

At one time the high decibel Loudspeaker use in Kolkata Durga Puja Pandals was a nuisance for the People. But the laws & the government took care of it with such appreciable efforts that today when the Festival has reached Global Heights, loudspeakers are no longer a concern.

It's always debatable, whether such waves of separatist approaches existed in the past or not. This prolonged loudness has been for quite some time fuelled & used by Political Motives resulting in slow & steady decay of a 'ONE Hindu Society', set aside a 'ONE Society'.

What lies ahead ? We don't know, but surely we don't expect a Messiah to make the changes.

Tara

‘Ding-Dong’; Neel dozed off to the door. The Wall Clock showed 11-30-AM.

‘Sorry to bother you’, actually Me & Ayesha just shifted here last night, the opposite flat, needed to check out certain things, so…

‘It’s okay, fire-off your queries’.

**************************************

It was 10-56-PM, Neel opened the door to loud voices. There was quite a crowd in the lobby.

Tara & Ayesha were leaving with their stuff, Ayesha was in all tears.

He stopped Tara, ‘What’s wrong?’

The Voices erupted, ‘They cannot stay here.”

‘Why? And at this hour? They have been here for over six months; I did not see anything objectionable. Being the nearest neighbour, I would have heard if anything was wrong.’

‘We cannot allow them to live here, this is against our Culture’.

‘Ridiculous!’

‘If you are so concerned you can leave too!’  a lady shouted.

‘Don’t worry, my friends have arranged something, will go there.’ Neel saw a tired, yet determined Tara. He helped them to the Cab, where someone was waiting.

‘Jadu ki Jhappi’ was the need of the hour, but he was not sure it would be a right gesture.

‘Sorry, I could not help’, fumbled Neel.

With a trademark Sunshine Smile, Tara replied, ‘You have been more than a help, we know it’s a tough road for us’.

He stood standstill as the Couple waved-off; his lips felt salty. Wiping off his cheeks Neel murmured, ‘Ek Ladki ko dekha’.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui : Fallible yet Quintessential

World was Never like this, World shall be what it has never been before. Time changes, perception shapes up from preconceived rigidity to logical flexibility. TEST lies in how well we have taken the LESSONS LEARNT.

In the post Covid era ‘Normal’ has re-defined itself, what seemed impossible is now a potential Probability. Maybe it’s the right time to introspect certain definitions of ‘acceptable love’ & social perception, breaking out of our pseudo comfort zone….the ‘Comfort’ feels ‘insecure’ at every new change on its way. India is a country of Diversities with a complex social fabric. Every now & then the conventional cultural approach will be subjected to new waves & challenges. ‘ChandÄĢgarh Ka Aashiqui’ brings up all these while still entertaining us….”Kaata laga to laga”.

Story Line :

Manvinder Munjal alias Manu (Ayushman Khurana), the ‘Macho Man’ from Chandigarh is a body builder & fitness enthusiast who chose to be the ‘tough guy’ post the trauma over his mother’s death in childhood, but his inner self remains as vulnerable as ever. ‘Manu’ runs a gym with his friends but the footfall over there is far & few.  Walks in the head turner, Zumba Dance Trainer, Maanvi Brar (Vaani Kapoor)…business roars up. Soon both are drawn towards each other, lust & love takes over. They move fast and come too close, the Guy dreams of a Relationship ! But ‘Maanvi’ is not just another ‘look conscious’ gorgeous lady, there is a something to be let known if ‘honesty’ is to be the backbone of any start. ‘Maanvi’ stuns ‘Manu’ with the Transformation-Story. Shocked, Confused, Agitated, Ashamed…’Manu’ barely struggles to accept Truth ! Then the Story of SHAME, Social Status, etc Continues....but somehow the Love keeps growing.....as the ‘Manu’ says "main kahan normal banda, mera story bhi normal nahi hona tha".

Team Work :

Any new experiment needs a team of convinced individuals who believes & feel passionate in their work. It’s this passion which clearly reflects in the movie. Director Avishek Kapoor & his team does in a wonderful job in Story Telling, portraying everything in the most engaging manner with the right blend of Intent & Sensitivity. While the light humour is maintained in most situations avoiding over dramatization & theatrics, the ‘Subject’ is dealt with thought provoking maturity. Abhishek effortlessly breezes through the introductory part getting bang on to the point within the initial 45 minutes. Sachin-Jigar’s music compliments with this early ‘hip-hop’ culture & pace quite well. While the early breeze entertains & engages you, it shows signs of something too serious coming up. At a very ‘feel-good’ high moment the film makers come up with ‘Maanvi’s revelations followed by the dumbstruck ‘Manu’s. With the soft & moderate punches along with right humour, at times, Avishek & Team shows the crudeness dished out by the Society. The scene where ‘Manu’ is seen rubbing the soap over his body under the shower is beautifully done in the most hard-hitting manner for our ‘traditional’ mindset. The song ‘Kalle Kalle’ & ‘Maafi’ are beautiful moments of the film.

Performance :

The Lead Pair shares a crackling chemistry & they literally carry the film on their shoulders.

‘Kudos’ to Ayushman Khurana for picking up yet another 'Hatke' subject, very much relevant to the time. He has done some real homework to look out & out ‘macho’. He is brilliant from being the shocked, confused yet compassionate lover fighting the inner war to identify ‘the right’ between social/family ties & sensibility.

Vani Kapoor is the ‘GEM’ in the movie. She is not just a ‘hot-bod’ in portraying a challenging role. Her expressions are heavenly. At every ‘hit’ from the people around her she shows the vulnerability yet the firmness to keep fighting. Being Shunned by Family (Mother specially) & Society, she puts up that Artificial Happy & Sexy Look for the Outer World, but the eyes reveal the Melancholy Soul !  She reminded me “Have you seen my heart ?” Her Eyes…..it seems I have seen them a thousand times !

If, there was any scope for improvement in the Script, possibly it was with the ending & a bit more of light into the medical details of transformation. Perhaps, that would have lent a few more ounce of gravity & may be the film would have been a Classic. But then everyone has a different way of expression & so long as the Intent is correctly portrayed the goal is achieved. Such movies are not only just products of art but the ones who aim to make us conscious of our ‘vulnerabilities’.

Whether such a Film is inspired by Real Life Incident, I don't know, but possibly such Stories exist in different corners of our country. And for sure FUTURE will dish out similar stories in our life.....the Test of Time shall decide how well we have stepped from the Box into the Real World. Will it be then be another Story of SHAME or PRIDE.....it will again be the time for MIRROR TEST !

83 : Priceless Journey

"35 years we have gained Independence, but we are yet to Command Respect"....that just sums up...why ‘83’ ? There is always a first time to everything in life and the 1st one is always the special one, it lays the foundation for future to build on.

Kids, who have had the opportunity of growing up in India during 80s-90s, have witnessed the 'Transformation of Cricket from being a Sports to a Religion'. Much of this was aided by the increasing Live Television Telecasts & rise of demand for Global Commercialization. But there was the Kick-off Point which started this & that was India's 1983 World Cup Story, the Story which shaped up on it's own, based on the belief that the Captain instilled in his teammates by being the Exemplary Leader.

The film starts off in the lunch hours at a Govt Office on 30-May-1983. The peon brings a letter which the Officer has to sign & receive. Reluctant to leave his lunch, officer signed with soiled hands & opens the letter. It was the Invitation Letter from ICC for India's participation in upcoming World Cup. With only one victory to show (against East Africa in past two World cups), for the officer the letter had hardly any significance, nothing more than a Head Count Participation Invitation !

It is not a Story, it's History which we all know. In the most light hearted engaging narrative, Kabir Khan & Team recreates the Time & Plot, the dressing room stories, the mood, the psyche, the background & the Emotion...for us to re-visit. The makers have plotted out the minute details from food habits, extra luggage requirement, Indian supporters, linguistic barriers, press reporting, reservation over entry to Lord’s, events before & after every match, the swinging moods & tempo to show the roller coaster to 25-June.

‘83’ is an innovative form of documentary-drama with the correct balance of facts & emotion. At multiple places the Reel images have been interchanged with Real images, be it the scene at the airport, news snippets or clippings. In fact, through the immigration check Kabir & Team help viewers to pair the reel characters with the real characters. Special attention has been made in highlighting the different milestones & records, big or small, achieved by the team or the players on individual level during the tournament. The aura of West Indian giants, the invincibility they brought with them, have been quite well illustrated in the scene where the senior pros are sharing the profile of the players while observing the net practice, symbolizing the terror the name of West Indies brought to the mind of viewers & opponents.

Beyond cricketing boundaries, ‘83’ portrays the underlying current of self-pride, dignity & Nationalism which was slowly & silently taking steps forward as Team India was making its progress. The scene at PMO, where the then Prime Minister Orders Television Telecast of the semi-final & final reflects the requirement of time, the changing ways of addressing Nationalism. Amidst the riots & curfew, the effort of a Muslim Family in trying to fix the TV-Antenna to watch India play shows the ‘Unity in Diversity’. Even the pause at cross-border firing between the two nations on the final match day is quite humorous. Restricted entry at Lord’s for Indian Spectators for the Final Match (right at the kick-off of the tournament) shows the questionable credibility World had over India being a Cricketing Nation & the Indian Team Manager had no answer for that.

For such a sleek & compact storytelling, music needed to be smarter. Also, a bit more of the on-field reactions of the opponent players from England & Australia, for the surprising performance from India, would have been better. The aggression of West Indian Fast Bowlers to gain upper hand looked little over played in a wrong way.

The Squad of 1983 is often referred to as ‘Kapil's Devils’, even the members of Squad believed it was possible because of the Captain while others filled in as per the requirement. Similarly, the crew would agree ‘83’ is majorly dependant on Ranveer Singh (Kapil Dev) with strong supports from Pankaj Tripathi (Team Manager, PR Man Singh), Jatin Sarna (Late Yashpal Sharma), Saqib Salem (Mohinder Amarnath), Jiiva (Krishnamachari Srikanth) and others.  Casting of Mohinder Amarnath (Lala Amarnath), Chirag Patil (Sandip Patil) & Mali Marshal (Malcom Marshall) as their celebrated fathers are pleasant surprise. Deepika Padukone (Romi Dev) looks misfit in the overall context. Jatin Sarna has got under the skin his role, the lesser known Yashpal Sharma, with some exuberance.

Saqib Salem, is elegant. As the Vice-Captain, Mohinder Amarnath had a very critical role to play alongside Kapil Dev, Saqib portrays that with fine delicacy. His expressions, while Mohinder starts admiring his Captain silently, is something to watch out for. His dressing room interactions with Ranveer mirrors the wisdom & calmness associated with Mohinder during the tournament. Saqib shoulders the ‘Big Brother’ Image perfectly, both on the 22 yards while taming the wild horses in Srikanth, Yashpal, Kirti & Sandip as well as off it. But the best part from Saqib comes out when he has to attend ‘Lalaji’ s phone call, a Champion living in the shadow & awe of his father’s name is so well translated !

Pankaj Tripathi as Man Singh looks a seasoned campaigner….be the scene of encouraging Ranveer in bus for a pep talk/team meeting or his trademark smile after being rejected for an entry pass for Lord’s on the final is brilliant as ever. Even during his telephone calls with Air India for ticket rescheduling, he is spot on with his indecision & vulnerability. The scene where  he tries to settle the ego hassle of the ex-captain with the new captain is quite special.

For cricket lovers who have witnessed 1983 live, for most of them ‘Paji’ is no less than a God & to step in the shoes of a demi-god is Gutsy ! Ranveer is superb as Kapil, picking up his diction, body language, Bowling Run up or ‘Nataraj’ Shot. The way he blasts at ‘Roger Binny’ (Nishant Dahiya) or criticizes ‘Sunil Gavaskar’ (Tahir Bhasin) or refusaes to issue any statement before semi-final sounds ‘Kapil’! He has done his homework quite well to make the on-screen character believable. Kapil made his mark as all-arounder & ‘Captain to be’ during his 175* vs Zimbabwe…..Ranveer just essays that part brilliantly. In the late 80s when ‘Ramayan’ was a Sunday feature on ‘Doordarshan’, ‘Arun Govil’ was often worshipped as ‘Ram’ in many parts of India ! Had the time been 80s, it would have not been a surprise if Mr. Singh had featured in some of the posters alongside the cricketers, while they were getting worshipped !

Post-Independence India’s success story in sports as a Unit, as a Team was critical for a Nation under Reconstruction Mode, but beyond the Field Hockey Gold Medals in 1964 & 1980 Olympics, nothing else was happening with equivalent success. The 1983-World Cup changed the Wave, the Victory in England sent out the message, loud & clear, from Lords Balcony…..’Don’t take us for granted we are here to stay….and if the need be, we shall do it on your soil….rok sako to rok lo’.

‘83’ is the tale of underdogs (spared not even by their own countrymen) rising to fame. It the story of the hurdles they crossed, the journey they made, the fight they put up to earn respect…………..the throwback we take.

Mind Games !

(Disclaimer : Following are personal interpretations based on experience & discussions in common circle. This does not claim to have any medical authenticity nor this intends to teach anyone on medical or behavioural sciences)

Sleep is often a good Tool/Parameter to understand one's Gross State of Mind, or in other words, his/her Experience/ Interpretation of Time.

There is always that Time Period when Sleeping is a Zero-Effort activity anyone can perform, without acknowledging the value of it. Had it come with some Price Tag we might have spent few sleepiness nights to acquire the Tag !

If we are honest to the Mirror, then there is always this Time when Sleeping becomes some 'Effort-Activity', to the extent that medical aid becomes essential.

A quick example, Jet Lag, when one travels to Time Zones with distinct differences, Sleep can get real Tough. Or, may be the Recent Lockdowns due to Pandemic. Does it not feel painful to put real effort for something which was supposed to come naturally ? That's the Price one pays for taking anything/anyone for granted.

Prolonged or Frequent Effort-Sleep Nights or in other words Insomnia might be for some health disorder but often it's because of the Stress-Strain or Past Trauma/Experience which keeps coming back. The Mind tends to be in some Constant Fight or some Denial Mode.

Consequence of such Repeatative Occurrence/Disturbance might differ from person to person....while some might Outgrow it will Time & Adapt to the needs mode of less sleep, some might not be able to do so & this may even result in UNWANTED CONSEQUENCES. May be it's all about the ability of controlling the Stuff between the Ears.

Often such prolonged sleeplessness, may create Fatigue to the extent of behavioural issues like frequent outbursts of anger/irritation etc. In such cases it's important to SUPPORT EACH OTHER, try to address on one-to-one basis, separately......

"Hey this seems unnatural from someone like you, may be something is there. If you wish to discuss let us discuss, else seek some HELP, may be professional advice..... please don't IGNORE."

GROWTH is eventually a product of things aligning in correct order.....and it's INCOMPLETE/IMPOSSIBLE with SOMEONE nearby in Pain & Not Sure or Willing to seek CONSTRUCTIVE HELP, considering it as UNWANTED FAVOUR/ADVICE !

Find a way, whatever it Costs You....in the End a LIFE Saved is far better than few bruises & wounds !

A different Day-Tour....Delhi

New Delhi or NCR, is always in the news for some reason or the other. A region which has been the centre of political establishments & achievements thereby creating historical significance is bound to be in the Limelight at most times. Aided by the changing cultural, socio-economic backdrops & and an ever changing migrant working population the region witnesses rapid transformations to cater the changing demands or requirements. Delhi hosts a variety of places, specially historical, worth visiting, depending on the individual's  interests, preferences & mood.

But I am here to explore the Laziness of Delhi which is highly affordable and a Real Treat if you want to enjoy a day or two in the winter season away from the traditional comforts of private taxis/cars, happy brunch or eat-outs at different cuisines. You can get all the elite-comforts at any other city for more or less same price, nothing special about them.....let 's explore little differently, amidst the crowd & daily bustle.

A foggy morning & early start would be ideal kick-off. Step out of the blanket, get ready & here we go! Caution : Don't over-burn, over-stuff or starve yourself. Take a day off from conventional touring....just collect the Bits & Pieces, you will relish stitching the memoir later..

Breakfast : Get to the road side Vendor, grab an Aloo-Paratha with Pickle & then sum it up with 'Adrakwali Chai', the milk tea with sugar & ginger. 'Bhaiya feeki banana', if you want to avoid tasting a syrup. Now get the Daily/Monthly Pass from nearest Metro Station & embark on 'The Journey'.

Neeli Chhatri Mandir : On the banks of Yamuna, near to Nigam Bodh Ghat (burning ghat in Delhi) & 'Yamuna Bank Station' on Metro-Blue Line, this Temple dates back to the days of 'Battle of Kurushetra', if historians & folklores to be believed.

It goes as....after the battle was over, Yudhisthir bathed on the banks of Yamuna & performed the religious rituals at this temple before setting his feet on the throne of Hastinapur.

However, appearance & continuous maintenance does not give the temple any pre-historic look, yet certain things are better believed to feed Romanticism.

National Museum : Located on Janapath in Lutyen's Delhi & close to 'Central Secretariat Station' on Metro-Yellow Line the Museum bodies real Collection of Conserved Indian Art-Items from sculpture, painting, musical instruments, handlooms, manuscripts of pre-historic times to the very recent beautiful 'Swaraswati' pandal-idol from West Bengal. Use the available Audio-Guide for better understanding.

Mirza Ghalib : Get down at 'Chawri Bazaar Station' on Yellow Line & take the walk through the busy & narrow lanes of Old Delhi to 'Galli Qasim Jan, Ballimaran' and meet one of the greatest ever poet in his Abode. If you are lucky to be in Delhi on 27-December or around that week evening functions are common at the house to commemorate the Poet.

Karim's & Parathewali Gali : Try out only the Kebabs at world famous Karim's, the cuisine started by the Cook from Mughal Kitchen & then the unique 'Rabri-Paratha' at Parathewali Gali. Kindly note only cash is acceptable at these places.

Hauz Khas Village Area : Now let's go to this area, near 'Hauz-Khas Metro Station' on Yellow Line. This place has attracted some Glamour Quotient owing to certain movies like 'Lakshya', 'Rock Star', 'Tamasha', etc.

A walk through to the Vast Deer Park/Lake/Tank area surrounded by Medieval Architectures all around, takes you to a different world. As you come out of the Lake Area, little ahead lies Firoz Shah Tughlak in his Tomb.

This entire area has the most modern amenities like open cafe, library-cum-bar-cafe (SOCIAL), restaurants, music against the backdrop of these Partially Restored Architectural Ruins. Just soak in the atmosphere for sometime at an open air cafe. Shopping without good bargaining skills is expensive.

The tour is now over. You may now finish off as you like it. Try the Kebabs or Parathas again at Old Delhi or rather be in the Warm & Cozy ambience of the Village, exploring the drinking/eating options. If you want a little different ending to the food riot, go for the kebabs at Qureshi's in Alaknanda/Kalkaji area, an open air experience.

Hope you have had a Great Day, it was a pleasure being the Guide. Have a nice rest & deep sleep....GOOD NIGHT !

Psychologist & Psychriatist

The moment you say you have visited one of them, eyes will start looking towards you, as if you are a Zombie....those who are a bit more politically correct will avoid immediate eye contact to hide their expression. But invariably among the acquaintance circle the Hush will keep growing.......for having turned mad, mentally disturbed. The basic assumption is that there cannot be "any smoke without fire". Quite strange still in our country Mental Health Issues are for 'Other Planet Residents' and not a normal health concern.

Mordern City Life, Financial Needs & Work-Life imbalance has generated or instigated several mental issues, which people don't speak off, considering career prospects, image building etc. Very Often you hear people telling friends or relatives too busy to call/meet, stating professional demands....which either they are ignoring or too stressed out to even talk for a while. In Corporate World Slide Shows/Presentations, Meetings, Safety Moments Mental Health Issues get discussed but not much beyond some procedural formalities.

Sometime in the past, in a filthy atmosphere, the increasing irritation of having to deal with unethical, manipulative, spineless, visionless, insensitive, arrogant, unprofessional individuals on a daily level was causing prolonged mental disturbance. The resistance was too much to really change things for the better, even though everything was crystal clear. The unsystematic system & it's existing players were not feeling Safe & Comfortable to come out and try to make a better tomorrow. The viscous  cycle kept repeating.  This was compounded by some personal disturbances & damages. To remain calm, composed & decent things were taking its Toll to the extent that prolonged sleep disturbance became chronic.

A good old friend suggested to consult some professional....and I went for Psychologist Consultation. He said, "first of all thanks that you came so early, no one speaks of this problem. It's a really strainous when you have to deal with such unwanted people on a daily basis....it's a pity when TRUST factor becomes zero. I think you will not need to come back again just follow one of the 2 things that will do, if you Love Yourself.

1) Ignore the people, or what they say & keep being decent : a tough one as you have to live day in and day out in the Negativity

2) Show the mirror : be ruthlessly straightforward, call a spade a spade right on the face. People will find it rude/uncomfortable, your image/fortune will be destroyed, but you will continue to Live happily. No use being nice & decent to useless people. Be yourself and don't pause to please others. "

Letter to Friend

Dear Friend,

First I need to apologize for being late, perhaps not too late, to acknowledge Your significant contribution in my life. The way You have accepted, honoured and lifted me leaves me with no other words but to say Thank You.

Journeys are subjected to end & so did ours. And in all probability the chances of any future interactions are remote or next to impossible. Or even if we meet again the past will be the reason which shall shape the future.

Our interactive moments might have been brief but those short spells are Life Time Memories. The way you have helped & supported me, at times advised or guided me has only enriched my life. Though the word 'debt' is not apt in a friendship but yet I remain indebted to You for the rest of my life.

It was never always smooth, we have had our differences, egos but You have always stood up to pamper or cajole me and bringing things back to normal. It was your efforts which made the journey memorable. You were the source of inspiration and key to stress relief at extreme times.

As we embark on different ships Your absence will be severely felt. Hope you have not Hated to be a part in our voyage, if so pardon My Arrogance & Imperfections.

Wishing you All the Best for a New Beginning. My apologies & thanks.....

Regards
Me & Myself

Epics : History behind

The historical backdrop of the Epics were more often veiled by the Stories, Imagination & Poetic Independence, partly intentionally & partly due to the fact that they being the single source of literature the responsibility lies with the creator to remind people of the different moral obligations & ethics and how that can influence life. Hence, the characters had to be from real life, or real-like for a story  Larger than Life. Inclusion of Women, their plight in the society, their fortune & struggle would help connect with a larger audience & hence they became the Centre Point of the Story. This had a double benefit, one a larger connectivity, secondly a lesson for the society to uplift itself from the prevalent obnoxious customs. The torch bearers of Women Empowerment might have objection to this view, but that is the hard reality & most importantly this is my interpretation of events & facts against the background of Time. Like it or not....Women are part of the Story.....not the Story.....Truth is stranger than Fiction!

Troy....the geographical location gave the kingdom the benefit of charging commercial taxes to anyone trying to do some business while travelling through the land...this Tax was the major contributor to the wealth of the kingdom. Hence, if any one was trying to evade or avoid the taxation had to make sure Troy gets defeated.....and perhaps this was the intent which resulted in the Trojan War. But a story was needed to justify this. The culture of Slavery, Concubines, Polygamy was prevalent at that time, even the buying or selling of slaves etc.....but these were all about common people.....their story/history was never a point of interest. The story of abduction of any royal queen was never heard of & whether such a thing happened or not we don't know....but this story was more appealing. Thus came HELEN, the immortal queen/symbol of beauty.....and the story unfolded...the Magnum Opera of Kings, Queens & their Royal Story. The Magic of the Blinding Dazzle of the glitters created a spectacle behind which the Political Dream was carefully hidden.

Ramayan, the story of Ram, some say it was written before he was born, written by the power of future telling...if that is the case then it has no historical significance. I do have doubts on that, as I believe it shows a picture of the then society. The truth behind the debatable theory of Aryan invasion about Ramayan is unknown but......Ramayan is the history of North vs South. The history of the concept/belief of the superiority complex of North over South with respect to brain, beauty, colour, appearance etc...and hence the ones from South are referred to as Apes in the veil of Monkeys, Rakshas. Hence, to ascertain such superiority Ram needs to defeat a villain of highest stature.....the stature of power, wealth, shrewdness, political position & venom. Enters RAAVAN ! And if the hero defeats the villain with a background of simplicity & skillful leadership...who starts from zero to create a military army from the otherwise incompetent disorganized group of people....then we  have a real Hero. This would also mean inclusion & acceptance of South, but only as an Annexure to North. To get the humble background Ram's 'vanavas' was easy....but how does Ram & Raavan meet ? Enters Sita...Raavan abducts Sita & the story begins.

Literature has significant contribution in social arena, it shows trends, revokes trends, suggests improvement....shows value of compassion, empathy, wisdom etc. Ramayan, the Epic, makes an Orphan the Heroine of the Story....Raja Janak accepted Sita as her daughter & Dasarath as her daughter-in-law. Sita, the symbol of good in women, refused/protested to sit for the Fire-Test on public demand. The failure of Ram to deal with this, paid the penalty, getting defeated hands of his son Luv-Kush, raised singly by Sita......poetic justice was done. Those who still have problems with orphans & single-parent child....or when in the heat of moment you curse someone as 'bastard'.....think about it.

Ram did not choose forest life or did not choose a saint's life after Lanka Victory....instead he became the king of Ayodhya, extended the ties to Lanka, performed Aswamedha.....what is this.....in the eyes of history this is Spreading the Wings of Imperialism! The Real Story gets hidden behind the characters & emotions of the Epic.  Ironically/Coincidentally, till the British Empire was established in India, no other king  from North or external invaders could win the South as a whole.......hence the Story of Ramayan became all the more important to the people of North.

Mahabharat, among the Epics this will always have a special place, as the relevance of the events or stories cited over there to the current time cannot be ignored. Literature is flooded with the research work or fictions created for the characters of Mahabharat, there will be more in future too simply because of the connectivity people can make with real life characters.

History looks at Mahabharat as the documentation of fight for land...not only extension of Imperial Powers but also acquiring of land. The vision, idea & skill of conversion of barren lands like Indraprastha to fertile habitable kingdom is a lesson learnt from the Epic. The common practice of use of Dice Game or Betting/Fixing to win wealth or land, trading (not monetary) of Women in such deals and the roles Women played reflects the history of the time which Mahabharat acknowledges. To create the Epic for such important events would need Strong Story & Powerful characters was a great responsibility, challenge & necessity for the creator....depicting the social practices & requirement of the reforms...yet not revealing the history.

Talking of Mahabharat certain characters need to be discussed as only then the significance of the change of certain rules in the context of political necessity can be assessed....the changing mindset.

Krishna : The hero of Mahabharat, is a product of Foster Parenting. People who refer to him as Womanizer would definitely appreciate his skills as Statesman. The same man whom some might have had looked down upon as a person best to be avoided, would have definitely admitted the brilliance in his thought process in re-creating political boundaries.....the multi-faced talent. Contrary to Sita's abduction by Raavan, abduction of Subhadra or Rukmini by Arjun or Krishna was now acceptable.....the necessity to accept the changing requirements of time & politics. Gita, the speech of Krishna addressing Arjun, was a Motivational Speech for political necessity by an intellect of highest order.....but the act of informing Karna about his original parenthood before the war was a demeaning act on part of Krishna....but it was right from the context of the bigger picture of Imperialism.

Draupadi : The practice of polygamy was prevalent among men....women never had that luxury. On the contrary women were used as commodity in the political deals & prizes of betting. The requirement to give equal right & opportunity to women as well as abolishing their misuse the heroine of the story has to undergo the Acid Tests.......and thus she became Yagyaseni.

Mahabharat is the story of the requirement of the changes of the society to make it a better liveable place for all. The stories of inclusion & eradication of venom/stories of pre-conceived notions of superiority.

Pandavas were the adopted sons of Kuru-dynasty and hence their right to throne could not be established in spite of their superiority....the requirement to change this prevalent trend was a political necessity, hence the war. At the end of the war of Kurushetra no one was alive as a direct bloodline of Kuru or Pandav dynasty....even Porikshit was given re-birth (or replaced as may be interpreted) to re-ascertain the requirement of trend change. On one side Krishna was fighting for the changing trend, hence either he or his brother could not use the Dwarka throne from inheritance...so the need of the then democratic system was established....something similar in the lines of Roman Senate or Gram Panchayat.

The acceptance of process of adoption in Royal Blood Line & hence in Society was a major step that Mahabharat scripted through the characters of Pandav & Karna. The injustice inflicted on the low castes by the upper caste was portrayed in Ekalavya's story. The direction of acceptance & inclusion of transgender as part of society, family, royal line was illustrated through the characters of Sikhandi, Brihonolla. The acceptance of the unusual yet honest Love Story of Radha-Krishna was emotionally addressed. All these stories were the reflection of the Society....existing or desirable changes.

Bhisma : The only character in the Epic who stood for relentless sacrifices he made for others. His loyalty & honesty towards the people & ethics, their well being at no personal benefit or gain is an example of rarest order. The General who single handedly ensured that no major damage was done to anyone on either side of the Blood Line or any other Royal figure by virtue of his military skills in 10 days of an 18-day War is an example of class. The One whose skills were ahead of Times, whom Krishna wanted to kill himself, gave away the trick to his own demise for promises of better times....the surrender of arms at the sight of Sikhandi. Bhisma was the only man who could have prevented the War, but he got confused in the conflicting interest/thin line of ethics, loyalty & wisdom.....his indecision led to the partition of Hastinapur, yet he could not evade a war. His silence at many occasions proved to be the key reason behind the consequences of time. But why was he not advised by Krishna, Bhisma always had high regards for Krishna ? Or was it that the changing times required the wings of Hastinapur to be clipped & re-modelled according to the new needs of Imperialism. History repeats itself......the partition of India...1947....did we not see similarly confused minds & reluctance ?

Behind the stories of Epics are the real intents, the intents of Imperialism to create History. The characters in the front & the over dramatization of events used to hide the real intent devours the events of time, history of the common man in due course of time.

The old school, who are busy chaining the cultural heritage of our country in the historical manuscripts & Sanskrit slokas.....kindly do not brand the new events/changes of the society as 'degradation'....a lot of these might already be existing in those manuscripts beyond the limitations of your memories & wisdom.
